Symantec Endpoint Protection

  1. What is Symantec Endpoint Protection?
  2. I want a copy! Can I have a copy?
  3. My friend goes to University of Oregon. Can I give him a copy?
  4. I have another antivirus program. Can I use both and get, you know, extra protection?
  5. How can I keep my computer safe from viruses?

What is Symantec Endpoint Protection?

Symantec Endpoint Protection is a program which monitors your computer for misbehaving programs that want to do harm to your files (ie, a virus). When it detects a file with a virus, it tries to clean the file and, if that fails, quarantines it (moves it to a part of the filesystem where it can't do any harm). You then have the option to delete the infected file.

I want a copy! Can I have a copy?

Are you an OSU student, staff member, or faculty? If so, you can take advantage of our site license of Symantec Endpoint Protection. Copies of Symantec Endpoint Protection are available (both PC and Macintosh) on either the OSUWare CD, which you can pick up at the Circulation Desk of the Valley Library, or on the tss website here.

My friend goes to University of Oregon. Can I give him a copy?

No. The site license agreement between Oregon State University and Symantec only allows OSU student, staff, and faculty to use the Symantec Endpoint Protection software. The software may not be shared with your friend from another university, father, mother, siblings, grandparents, or any pets you may have, unless, of course, they fall into the category of student, staff, or faculty here at Oregon State. If you know someone in need of the software, they may purchase it directly from Symantec's site or from most software retailers.

I have another antivirus program. Can I use both and get, you know, extra protection?

No. You will need to uninstall your current Antivirus program or not install Symantec Endpoint Protection. Installing both programs simultaneously will cause problems and can make your computer unusable. If you have already installed both, try to install the last one you installed. If your computer isn't bootable, call OSU Computer Helpdesk at 737-3474 and we'll try to help you get it working again over the phone.

How can I keep my computer safe from viruses?

Watch what you download. Don't open any unrequested attachments in your email. Don't use file sharing programs, such as Kazaa, Limewire, or Bearshare. Run a virus scan at least once a month, and update your virus definitions on a regular basis. If you are using Outlook as your mail client, make sure to get the most up to date patches available for it.

StatGraphics

  1. While installing StatGraphics off of the ORSTWare CD, I get a Setup Initialization Error, what am I doing wrong?
  2. How do i get statgraphics?

While installing StatGraphics off of the ORSTWare CD, I get a Setup Initialization Error, what am I doing wrong?

If the error you are getting is:

Setup is unable to find _SETUP.DLL, which is needed to complete the installation.

Error 103

When you click on the "Install Statgraphics" link, a window pops up asking whether you want to save the file to your computer or not. Do NOT save this file to your computer. Instead, open it from its current location. There are multiple files needed to install StatGraphics so when you save setup.exe to your computer and try to run it, setup.exe doesn't know where the rest of the files are. This leads to the error.

If you open setup.exe from the CD without saving it to your computer, you should be able to install the program without any problems.

How do I get statgraphics?

  1. OSUWare CD available at the Circulation desk in the Valley library. OSU ID card is required.
  2. Download Statgraphics from the website. Be sure to follow all the directions on the website and to include the organization when installing Statgraphics.
