»Conficker Worm

The Conficker Worm, also known as Downup, Downandup, or Kido, is a virus affecting Windows based machine, which will begin attempting to connect to a server to download and spread more copies of itself on April 1, 2009. Symptoms of this worm include:

  • Account lockout policies being reset automatically
  • Automatic Windows updates, Windows Defender, Error Reporting Srevices, and other Microsoft Windows services are disabled.
  • Network traffic can become congested and internet speed will decrease

If you think you might be infected, you can visit http://www.joestewart.org/cfeyechart.html for simple, visual test. If you are using the OSU proxy this test will not work though, so you can visit http://oregonstate.edu/resnet/guides/proxy.php to see how to disable the proxy.

If you have not been infected and are running a Windows based machine, you can take these simple steps to protect yourself:

  1. Download the patch found at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx and install it based on your operating system.
  2. Run the Windows Malicious Software Tool or other means listed on the Wikipedia page below.

For more information, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conficker.
