Upgrading Cisco VPN Client in Windows XP
Uninstalling the Old VPN ClientTo uninstall the VPN client click on the Start button.Choose Control Panel from the Start Menu. ![]() Double click on Add/Remove Programs and wait for the list of programs to load. ![]() Scroll to the bottom of the list and highlight VPN Client. ![]() Click on the Change/Remove button. During the uninstall process you will be asked a series of questions. Click Yes to answer the question asking if you are sure you want to completely remove Cisco Systems VPN Client and all of its components? ![]() The second question will ask do you wish to delete your existing connection profiles? Click No. ![]() Click Yes to the next question, do you wish to delete your existing Cisco certificates. ![]() Once the Uninstall process is complete, you will be asked if you want to reboot your computer. Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now and then click Finish. ![]() Downloading the New Version of Cisco VPNOpen a web browser like Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.![]() Go to the web address http://oregonstate.edu/net/security/vpn/. On this web page look for the heading Acquire OSUSDS/VPN Client Software. ![]() Click on the link for Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP. You will be prompted to login; enter your ONID account information. ![]() Locate the recommended production version and click on the download link. ![]() Choose to save the file to the desktop. ![]() Close the web page. Installing the New Verison of VPNTo begin installing the new VPN version, create a new folder on your desktop by right clicking on your desktop, choosing New, clicking Folder, and name the folder VPN.![]() Double click on the file vpnclient... to open it. You will also need to click Run if you're prompted to respond to a security warning. ![]() In the WinZip Self-Extractor window click on the Browse... button. Choose the New Folder that you just created and click OK. ![]() Next click the Unzip button in the WinZip Self-Extractor window. When the extraction is finished, click OK and the installation process will begin. Click Next in the welcome window, then click Yes to accept the license agreement. Click Next and Next again. Click to accept the default destination folder location. You will see a progress bar showing you when your installation will be complete. At the end of the installation you will be asked to restart your computer. Choose Yes and click Finish.
Starting the New Version of VPNOpen up the Cisco VPN client by clicking on the Start button, then click on All Programs and find the Cisco System VPN Client, then choose VPN Client from the list.![]() You will see your old connection entries still saved and ready for you to use in the VPN window. The upgrade is complete. Click on the SDS Configuration Assistant. You will be prompted to login; enter your ONID account information. ![]() The next screen will ask you a few questions that you need to answer to get the correct settings for your situation.
